The OH-KY Confluence

Kentucky River empties into the Ohio

The Kentucky River flows into the Ohio River at Carrollton, KY. Our home for the next two nights was at 2 Rivers RV Campground located at the point of confluence. The pathway along the Kentucky River was right outside our door and it was only a short walk to Point Park where the Ohio River and Kentucky meet.

River walkway

When we took the paved trail to the park, a river barge was working its way along the Ohio and passed right in front of us. It was about a football field in length and was pushed along from the back by a towboat.

It was also fascinating to watch the Kentucky river currents carry logs and rafts of sticks and debris along until they turned onto the Ohio River and were carried away on the new current.

Carrollton has a rich history dating back to the 1790’s when it was called Port William and visited by the early settlers traveling the Ohio River on keel boats. The town was later renamed for Charles Carroll who was the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. Civil War skirmishes occurred in Carrollton and Point Park is the site of the annual living history re-enactment.

The town still has a vintage look to it and the sound of church bells ringing out the hours adds to the feeling of a bygone era.

I-71 Bridge over the Ohio River

I have crossed high above the Ohio River many times on the I-71 bridge, but to walk with the current along the banks and watch a barge travel along the river, I sensed the power of the Ohio and its majesty for the first time.

2 Rivers RV Campground Review

The campground has all pull-thru sites with full hookups. Each site includes a fire ring, picnic table and free WiFi. Sites are separated by grass. The shower house building is well lighted, secure, newer construction, and sparkling clean. Showers had plenty of hot water and pressure. Bathrooms were well stocked and very clean. The nearby camp host was friendly and really kept an eye on the property. Reservations are required and registration is completed on-line only. For winter camping, we only used the electric hook up during our stay. The campground was very quiet and only about half filled.

2 Rivers Campground
River walkway adjacent to park

As described earlier, the campground is connected to a beautiful short walk along a paved pathway following the Kentucky River to Point Park where it empties into the Ohio River. A fishing pier over the Kentucky is adjacent to the campground. The playground equipment looked new and inviting.

We highly recommend 2 Rivers Campground for its cleanliness, river walk, and proximity to Point Park and historic Carrollton.
